Photoshop Tutorials - Glowing Text Effect
With different font's, size's and colors you can create hundreds of similar glow styles within minutes.
Goal Time: An advanced user less than 5 minutes to complete. (without tutorial)

  • Type out your text
This tutorial uses a thin font called "Maori". You may not have this font available; however, the same glow technique will still work.

    1. Create your dark background.
      Color Used: #151618

    2. Create your text layer.
      Color Used: #412810

  • Setup the inner glow
The inner glow effect will particularly add depth and shading to your font. Double click a layer to open the layer style.

    1. Blend Mode: Color Dodge
    2. Opacity: 60%
    3. Glow Color: White
    4. Size: 5px

  • Apply Stroke and Outer Glow
The stroke will provide a crisp outline and the outer glow adds a final touch to mid-dark backgrounds. This is not required, but preferred.

    1. Stroke: 1px - Black
    2. Outer Glow: 68% - Black
  • Apply Gradient Style
The gradient effect lightens the text as seen left. This also makes the top of the letters slightly brighter than the lower portion.

    1. Bland Mode: Color Dodge
    2. Opacity: 60%
    3. Scale: 150%

Layer Window View
  • Duplicate and Merge
Now we need to duplicate the text we just created

    1. Duplicate your Text layer.
Right click layer -> duplicate layer

    2. Create a new blank layer.
      Ctrl+Shift+N

    3. Select both layers created in layer window.
(Hold Ctrl key and click the layers to select them both)

    4. Press Ctrl+E to merge these layers together.

You should now have two layers left in your project. The original text layer, and the duplicated merged layer.

  • Apply the glow to complete
Now we just need to apply the bright glow effect to these letters.

    1. Set the created 'layer' to Linear Dodge.

This will make the text ready to blur.

    2. Gaussian Blur: 1.4
Menu: Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
You can make the text less or more bright by adjusting the gaussian blur radius and layer opacity.

    3. Now given you completed all these steps; your text will have a nice bright glow effect. Remember, different font's, sizes and colors will give different results!
